Sofronis Efstathiou
Sofronis, otherwise known as Saf, is a Principal Academic at the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) at Bournemouth University. Teaching primarily on the Masters in 3D Computer Animation course, he was the co-creator of the BFX Competition and BFX Festival, having been its director since its inception in 2011 until 2020
Saf has experience of working across the creative industries; having developed credit-bearing courses for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, as a Trainer at Microsoft’s Lionhead Studios and employed as the Training Manager at Animal Logic in Sydney.
Saf has been at Bournemouth University for nearly 25 years (Crikey!) having moved from South London as a teenager. He loves films, making them with his cousins and sisters as a child. His main weapons of choice were the family video camera and his sisters teddy bears and barbies. At the age of 12 (and with his cousin) he wrote, directed and starred in RoboCop 2; a sequel created about 20 mins after watching the first film. It was mostly mocked by family members for being a carbon copy of the original, however the SFX were largely responsible for destroying several white school shirts and the all the tomato ketchup in the house.
Saf’s other love is games, playing them since he was 6 years old when his dad bought an Atari 2600. Slowly he made his way through a Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari ST and a Commodore Amiga. Good times!
